Building climate resilience in Dar es Salaam

26.11.2014

NDF has approved EUR 5.0 million grant financing to support the Dar es Salaam Metropolitan Development Project

Together with the International Development Association (IDA) NDF is co-financing the Dar es Salaam Metropolitan Development Project in Tanzania. The project will be the first in a series of engagements that aim to transform Dar es Salaam into a future megacity with sufficient infrastructure for the increasing population.

In recent years Dar es Salaam has become increasingly vulnerable to climate change due to sprawl and informality. The project is focused on improving services to the poor related to housing planning, access to residential occupancy rights, urban mobility and curbing the informal sector as well as improving other urgently needed basic infrastructure.

The NDF grant will be targeted to Institutional Strengthening, Capacity Building, and Urban Analytics. The areas also include activities related to urban resilience, flood control, land-use planning and transport solutions. The grant will also support the improvement of the metropolitan governance and build capacity among the various institutions in Dar es Salaam that are involved in city planning and administration.

Nordic institutions and private companies have extensive experience in urban planning, low carbon urban mobility, and flood protection, which all are areas covered under NDF financing. The procurement will be done according to World Bank procurement rules and several consulting assignments will be needed throughout the duration of the project.
