First geothermal training course completed

26 Latin American students completed their specialized geothermal diploma course in El Salvador

For five months, 26 students from El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador and Peru, have been trained through a specialized geothermal diploma course at the University of El Salvador. The diploma course consists of a mix of theoretical and practical classes to develop scientific, analytical and technical skills of the participants. The course uses specialized laboratories with the latest technology and on-site work at geothermal fields in El Salvador. Topics include geological exploration, geochemistry, and geophysics while field work included geothermal drilling techniques.

The Geothermal Specialization Diploma was developed by the UNU-Geothermal Training Centre in Iceland, National Energy Board (CNE), Faculty of Engineering and Architecture University of El Salvador, and La Geo Geothermal Company. The training center and the specialized diploma course if financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Nordic Development Fund (NDF).

Geothermal energy is a potential important energy source for many Latin American countries in their transformation towards low carbon development. This is creating a demand for qualified personnel which the regional training center and its diploma courses contribute to cover.
