IDB and NDF partner to address urban climate change and renewable energy

IDB and NDF sign an agreement for support to the Emerging and Sustainable Cities Initiative and renewable energy in Honduras.

The Nordic Development Fund (NDF) will provide a contribution of EUR 4 million in continued support to the Emerging and Sustainable Cities Initiative (ESCI) in Latin America. NDF resources will be used to follow-up on the results of previous NDF-IDB support to midsize cities in Bolivia, Honduras and Nicaragua. Another grant of EUR 0.5 million will be used to develop a strategy and investment plan for renewable energy in the Bay Islands in Honduras.

Two agreement were signed by Luis Alberto Moreno, President of IDB, and the NDF Management.

The NDF partnership with IDB is more than two decades old and the present NDF climate change portfolio with IDB consist of 21 projects to a total volume of EUR 53.6 million.

The objective of the proposal is to strengthen low carbon development and reduce vulnerability to climate change through implementation of the key elements in the Action Plans for Cochabamba, Bolivia; Managua, Nicaragua; and Tegucigalpa in Honduras. The three Action Plans were financed through project NDF C40.

The objective is to determine the renewable energy potential in the Honduras Bay Islands and evaluate the feasibility of using wind and solar energy sources. The assessment will be used to prepare a strategy in order to reduce progressively the use of fossil fuel in the islands.
