Improving Transport Infrastructure in Zambia
The Zambian Government will receive support for planning a climate resilient transport sector through a project co-financed by NDF.
An agreement between Minister Alexander B. Chikwanda, Ministry of Finance, and NDF concerning the Strengthening Climate Resilience Project - Developing Climate Resilient Infrastructure Standards -project was signed on March 20th, 2014 at the Zambian Ministry of Finance in Lusaka.
The infrastructure in Zambia is underdeveloped due to poor maintenance, construction quality and standards, and the increase of extreme weather events. The country is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate and economic shocks due to its economy’s dependence on natural resources.
NDF’s project will be streamlined into Zambia’s Strategic programme for Climate Resilience and co-financed with the World Bank. NDF’s financing will focus on developing climate resilient infrastructure standards and thus increasing emphasis on the systematic integration of climate change adaptation needs throughout the transport sector design and management process at the policy level.
The design of the NDF project has benefitted from similar type of efforts in road transport programmes in Cambodia, Vietnam, and Nicaragua. NDF is building up considerable knowledge on climate resilience and roads.
