Master’s degree in Transport and Climate Change

The Minister of Transport and Nordic Development Fund inaugurated last week at the National Engineering University (UNI) a Postgraduate Course on Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change Applied to Road Infrastructure. The seven-month course will train professional staff from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure in Nicaragua how to handle climate change impacts in the transport sector. The specialised course runs in parallel to a Master’s Degree course at the Central American University (UCA) on risk management, disaster reduction and climate change adaptation for the transport sector.

Both courses form part of a comprehensive training and capacity building effort for the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and the Road Maintenance Fund in Nicaragua under the NDF financed Developing Adaptive Capacity for Climate Change in Transport Project. A total of 36 staff from the Ministry and other key stakeholders will participate in the two training courses.

The Minister of Transport José Amadeo Santana Rodríguez said:
"We want our staff to strengthen their knowledge because climate change is something for real that we are seeing and living its consequences now. It is becoming the new normal that we are seeing roads destroyed by 3-hour downpours, so through these courses our staff will understand the causes and what we can do to build more resilient roads."

Mr. Aage Jorgensen, Country Program Manager at NDF expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Nicaragua road transport and climate change project:
“We see positive results in this project and have very good cooperation with the Ministry who is a strong and dedicated partner. This project produces interesting results that we can use in other similar transport and climate change projects elsewhere in Africa and Asia.”
