Momentum for Change Awards Announced

27.10.2015

Of 16 Game-Changing Climate Action Initiatives, four go to NDF-backed activities

On 27 October, UNFCCC announced the winners of this year Momentum for Change Lighthouse Activity 2015. The awards are selected by the UN Climate Change secretariat to shine a light on some of the most innovative, scalable and replicable examples of what people are doing to address climate change. Today’s announcement is part of wider efforts to mobilise action and ambition as national governments work toward adopting a new universal climate agreement in Paris.

NDF is delighted to announce that out of 16 winners, four of them-25%- are NDF-backed innovations. This is a clear indication that NDF is a frontrunner on innovative climate change initiatives. The winners are:

• Emerging and Sustainable Cities Initiative is tackling climate change by creating planning tools and action plans to put Latin American cities on a low-carbon, highly resilient pathway.

• Solvatten® is an innovative but simple technology which utilises solar radiation (UV and heat) to purify water. It was used in the NCF-financed project “Enhancing capacity for adaptation to, and mitigation of, climate change in Kibera”.

• LifeLink water solutions helps build resilience to the effects of climate change by providing access to safe, sustainable and affordable water to people in developing countries. LifeLink was utilised in the NCF project “Community Based Adaptation to Climate Change through Environmentally Sustainable Water Resources Management in Isiolo District.”

• SELF’s Solar Market Gardens combines solar-powered pumps with drip irrigation systems to provide for the reliable, year-round, production of high-value, nutritious produce. It was part of the NCF project “Scaling the Solar Market Garden.”

The awards will be distributed at the climate change conference in Paris.
Congratulations to all the winners!
