Policy Brief on Gender and Climate Change

26.09.2014

The Brief highlights the need and demand for mitigation measures that tap women’s potential to contribute to emissions reductions and sustainable development.

As a part of the regional technical assistance project Harnessing Climate Change Mitigation Initiatives to Benefit Women, financed by NDF and implemented by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), a policy brief on gender and climate finance has been prepared. The policy brief highlights the need for reforms to make climate finance more inclusive as well as the fact that gender considerations must be built in to emission reduction activities, rather than being added as an afterthought.

In the past, discussions on climate change and gender have mainly focused on women’s vulnerability - leading to a focus on adaptation measures. While adaptation measures are certainly important,  this brief focuses on women’s vital role in reducing emissions and contributing to sustainable development and in acting as agents of change.
