SOFF presents a solution for early warnings at UN General Assembly

22.09.2023

The 78th UN General Assembly, taking place in New York, gathers the international community to find solutions to global pressing challenges, emphasizing on the urgency of climate action. NDF engaged in high-level discussions relating to climate finance and development.

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres launched in 2022 the Early Warnings for All initiative (EW4All) to ensure that everyone on Earth is protected through life-saving early warning systems by 2027. In the context of this initiative, the Systematic Observation Financing Facility (SOFF) was established to deliver results for EW4All. NDF was an anchor financier of SOFF, which has been named as an innovative example on how global public goods can be financed effectively.

“We recognize the urgent need for SOFF, a fundamental building block of the UN Early Warnings for All Initiative. SOFF enables closing gaps of basic weather and climate observations in the countries that are most vulnerable to the disastrous consequences of climate change,” says Karin Isaksson, Managing Director of NDF.

“Investing in SOFF means investing in global public goods as it provides benefits leading to local, regional, and global positive impact and we are proud to have embarked on this journey as the first financier. As a member of the EW4All Advisory Panel and Co-Chair of the SOFF Steering Committee, we invite financiers to act now, to invest in SOFF to provide the data needed to build early warnings for all and to save lives,” she continues.
