Support to climate proofing of infrastructure in Central America

02.05.2011

NDF provides a grant to review infrastructure investments to identify opportunities for climate-friendly improvements

The NDF Board has approved a new project that will support a review of infrastructure investments in Central America and propose actions to make them more climate-friendly.

Renewable energy and energy efficiency play an important role in mitigating the climate change. Switching to carbon free or carbon neutral fuels and limiting the unnecessary growth of energy demand will directly reduce the GHG emissions. Good opportunities for the introduction of energy efficiency and alternative fuels exist in developing countries, especially in the industrial, commercial, and public sectors. The main opportunities can be found in energy production, transportation, manufacturing, lighting, refrigeration and air conditioning, water heating, and building design and construction.

The proposed project would systematically review previous investments by the Structured and Corporate Finance Department, of the Inter American Development Bank, in Central America and suggest changes how the facilities could be upgraded to be more energy efficient and use energy sources less harmful to the climate.
