Objectives

The proposed Landfill Gas (LFG) Capture & Utilization Project will strengthen the climate change profile of the UESP II by reducing the emissions of GHG from landfills, increasing renewable energy use and financial sustainability of waste management operations and, improving the living conditions of the urban poor. The estimated net reduction of GHG emissions off the three project landfills over a period of 10 years is around 1.2 million tons of CO2 equivalent.

Financing

The project forms part of the 2nd Urban Environmental Sanitation Project (UESP II) financed by the World Bank. NDF grant of EUR 2 million is estimated to cover the total cost of the international consulting services for three landfills. CDM related investment costs are estimated at EUR 5.8 million (to be covered by private CDM investors, Metropolitan/Municipal Assemblies (MAs), the Government and, eventual other financiers). Total UESP construction costs of the three landfills have been/will be approx. EUR 23 million.
