Partner agency: World Bank
Project completed in September 2020. Actual disbursed amount EUR 4,000,000.00.

Objectives

The overall objective of the Electricity Expansion Project is to increase the capacity, efficiency and quality of electricity supply and increase access to electricity in urban, peri-urban and rural areas. The proposed NDF component will focus on off-grid electrification using wind and solar energy thus reducing the use of fossil fuels in existing diesel power stations, and providing basic energy services to rural population using solar energy.

NDF will finance two following sub-components under Component C, namely

a) To assist Kenya Power (KP) in selecting, designing and installing hybrid energy systems which will reduce generation by diesel power, and

b) To provide basic energy services to rural schools and nearby households through solar charging facilities. This would provide electricity to the schools and enable charging of portable lanterns to be used by the pupils in their homes.

Financing

Total project cost of the Electricity Expansion Project is about EUR 1 billion (USD 1,390 million) including funding from IDA (USD 330 million), JICA (USD 323 million), AFD (USD 220 million), EIB (USD 168 million), KfW (USD 84 million) and Government of Kenya (USD 170 million), other local financing (USD 90 million), and other sources (USD 5 million). The cost of NDF component is EUR 4 million.
