Objectives

The overall objective of the World Bank financed PROGEDE II is to contribute to increase the availability of diversified household fuels in a sustainable and gender equitable way, and to contribute to increase the income of participating communities while preserving the forest ecosystems. PROGEDE II builds on the successful experience of PROGEDE I, in particular on community based forest management, and has a strong focus on household energy. It consists of four Components:

  1. Reform of the charcoal value chain;

  2. Sustainable wood fuel supply;

  3. Promotion and diversification of modern household energy; and

  4. Institutional arrangements for project implementation.

The NDF grant will support Component II Sustainable wood fuel supply; and Component III Promotion and diversification of modern household energy, which have the most direct climate benefits. These activities will protect and regenerate forest areas, promote the use of efficient charcoal production methods, support the manufacturing and marketing of improved stoves, and promote new CO2 neutral biomass energy sources.

Financing

Total PROGEDE II costs EUR 11.1 million. NDF grant EUR 3.0 million.
